Cordless Drills

January 2008 Cordless drills are now essential for the DIY mechanic, thanks to excellent performance and ever lower prices. With tools now available for around £20, there's no need to dig out the extension lead each time you're working on your car. And, of course, there are lots of jobs where a drill comes in handy. They're not solely for making holes to take new kit - add wheel cleaning balls or polishing pads and they can help take the strain out of valeting. There's nothing like a drill-mounted wire brush for cleaning up rusted parts, while adapters can be fitted to 1/4-inch drive sockets to let you fit countless driver bits. But which is the drill to go for? We found out...

Upholstery cleaner

A Second award for Comma's Interior Cleaner in this Product Honours.

Glass cleaner

The budget entry from Comma really cut through the grease, leaving our test panel streak and smear free after only a couple of passes. Others matched its cleaning power in a competitive sector, but no other managed it at this price

Bumper shine

We are continually amazed by Black in a Flash's aerosol, as it never seems to throw in the towel. Two months on, it was still going strong when others had long since given up on beading water.

Speed trap locator

If you've already invested in a portable sat-nav system, this is the locator for you, as it does all you need at a cracking price.

Headlamp bulb

Our winner comes from the plus 50 per cent category, which refers to the amount of light produced 75 metres ahead of the car compared with a standard bulb.

Tyre shine

you a truly remarkable product. As with bumper shines, the tyre versions have serious stamina, but few can match CarPlan's serial winner, Tyre Slik.

Foot pump

Proving that when it comes to tyres, there's little the French giant doesn't know, Michelin took a clear victory in our foot pump category. The twin-barrel unit was the largest we tested, and that paid off as it was super-stable while being pumped, and the treaded plate gave good grip.

Hoseless car wash

Ever since their launch a couple of years ago, we've been fans of Car Wash Wipes - now called Clean & Shine Wipes. They are a favourite of our road test team, and it's easy to see why, as they lift dirt without damage and take no more effort than running a sponge over the car.

Trim cleaner

This is the kind of cleaner Comma made its name with. The big 750ml pack is offered at a price that most rivals charge for smaller bottles, and its performance is outstanding. And that's not all! The trigger pack is versatile as it can be used on pretty much all interior surfaces, including leather.
